CFA Level III is the final exam of the Chartered Financial Analyst programme run by CFA Institute. It focuses on portfolio management and wealth planning: building and managing portfolios for individual and institutional clients. Candidates choose one of three specialized pathways, Portfolio Management, Private Markets or Private Wealth, which makes up 30-35% of the exam, alongside core topics worth 65-70%. Passing it, with qualified work experience, leads to the CFA charter.
The examination process for CFA Level III comprises 2 stages: Session 1, followed by Session 2. The official syllabus tests candidates across 8 core areas — Asset Allocation (15-20%), Portfolio Construction (15-20%), Performance Measurement (5-10%), Derivatives and Risk Management (10-15%), Ethical and Professional Standards (10-15%), Pathway: Portfolio Management (30-35%, if chosen), Pathway: Private Markets (30-35%, if chosen), Pathway: Private Wealth (30-35%, if chosen) — focusing on conceptual clarity, speed, and accuracy. Results are pass or fail against a minimum passing score set by CFA Institute. Item sets are machine scored and constructed-response answers are graded by charterholders, so results take longer than at Levels I and II.
