About GPSC Class 1 & 2

The Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) Gujarat Administrative Service, Class-1, Gujarat Civil Services, Class-1 & Class-2, and Gujarat Municipal Chief Officer Service, Class-2 Examination is the flagship civil services examination of Gujarat. Conducted from Gandhinagar, it recruits officers for the state's premier executive and police cadres including Deputy Collector / SDM, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), District Registrar, Mamlatdar, Section Officer (Sachivalaya), and Taluka Development Officer (TDO). The examination follows a three-stage structure: a two-paper OMR Preliminary test of 400 marks, a six-paper descriptive Main examination of 900 marks (with no optional subjects), and a 100-mark Personality Test. Selected Class-1 and Class-2 officers drive industrial governance, revenue administration, coastal security, and rural development across Gujarat's 33 districts.

The examination process for GPSC Class 1 & 2 comprises 3 stages: Preliminary Examination, followed by Main Examination (Written Descriptive), followed by Personality Test (Interview). The official syllabus tests candidates across 6 core areas — History, Art, Literature and Cultural Heritage of Gujarat & India, Geography and Economy of Gujarat and India, Indian Polity, Constitution, Public Administration & Ethics (Mains GS II), Science & Technology, Environment and Disaster Management (Mains GS III), General Mental Ability & Quantitative Aptitude (Prelims Paper 1), Gujarati & English Language Proficiency and Essay (Mains Papers I, II & III) — focusing on conceptual clarity, speed, and accuracy. Prelims (400 marks combined across GS Paper 1 and GS Paper 2) is a screening test that shortlists roughly 15 times the total vacancies for Mains. Final merit is determined by the sum of all 6 compulsory Mains papers (900 marks) and the Personality Test (100 marks), totaling 1,000 marks.

How to prepare for GPSC Class 1 & 2

  1. Never leave an OMR circle completely blank in GPSC Prelims—if you do not know an answer, you MUST darken Option 'E' (Not Attempted), otherwise 0.3 marks will be deducted as a penalty.
  2. Give top priority to Mains Paper I (Gujarati, 150 marks), Paper II (English, 150 marks), and Paper III (Essay, 150 marks); together they constitute 450 out of 900 Mains marks (50% of the written exam).
  3. Practice the 50 Maths and Reasoning questions in Prelims Paper 1 thoroughly—a strong score in this 50-mark block easily pushes you above the 400-mark combined Prelims cutoff.
  4. Read standard Gujarat state board (GCERT) textbooks and university Granth Nirman Board books on Gujarat's history, cultural heritage, and geography.
  5. In Mains GS Papers IV, V, and VI, all 15 questions of 10 marks each are compulsory—practice writing crisp 200-word answers in 11 minutes per question.
  6. Read the official GPSC Class 1 & 2 notification carefully for the exact pattern, eligibility and selection stages.

GPSC Class 1 & 2 FAQs

Are the Gujarati and English papers in GPSC Class 1 & 2 Mains only qualifying?

No. Unlike UPSC, in GPSC Class 1 & 2 Mains, Paper I (Gujarati - 150 marks) and Paper II (English - 150 marks) are fully counted in the final 900-mark written merit list.

What is the Option E rule in GPSC Prelims OMR sheets?

GPSC OMR sheets have five options (A, B, C, D, E). If a candidate wishes to skip a question, they must fill in Option 'E' (Not Attempted); leaving all five bubbles blank attracts a 0.3-mark negative penalty.

Is Prelims Paper 2 a qualifying CSAT paper in GPSC?

No. In GPSC Class 1 & 2 Prelims, both Paper 1 (200 marks) and Paper 2 (200 marks) are General Studies papers (with 50 Maths/Reasoning questions inside Paper 1), and marks of both papers are added together out of 400 to decide the cutoff.

Are there any optional subjects in the GPSC Class 1 & 2 Main Examination?
