SSC CPO exam overview and highlights

About SSC CPO

The SSC CPO (Central Police Organisation) examination recruits Sub-Inspectors in Delhi Police and in the Central Armed Police Forces (BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP and SSB). It is open to graduates and involves two objective papers, physical tests and a medical examination. The post is a Group B or Group C uniformed position with supervisory responsibilities.

The examination process for SSC CPO comprises 4 stages: Paper I, followed by Physical Endurance Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST), followed by Paper II, followed by Detailed Medical Examination. The official syllabus tests candidates across 4 core areas — General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Knowledge and General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, English Comprehension (Paper I and Paper II) — focusing on conceptual clarity, speed, and accuracy. Paper I marks shortlist candidates for the PET and PST, which are qualifying. Only those who clear them sit Paper II. SSC CPO cut-off trends, score normalization and safe target score

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) releases stage-wise and category-wise SSC CPO cut-off marks at each stage (Prelims/Tier-I shortlisting, Mains/Tier-II evaluation, and Final Merit List). Candidates must clear both minimum qualifying standards and overall/sectional merit cut-offs to advance.

SSC CPO — Qualifying Standards & Safe Target Benchmarks

SSC CPO qualifying standards and safe target score
CategoryQualifying Floor / StandardRecommended Safe Target
General / Unreserved (UR)30% to 40% Minimum Qualifying Floor72% to 82% of Total Marks (95+ Percentile in Mock Tests)
General — Economically Weaker Section (GEN-EWS)25% to 35% Minimum Qualifying Floor68% to 78% of Total Marks

Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled Tribe (ST) / PwBD20% to 30% Minimum Qualifying Floor58% to 70% of Total Marks

Score Normalization & Marking Impact

When SSC CPO is conducted across multiple shifts or sessions, Staff Selection Commission (SSC) applies standard score normalization (Equi-Percentile or Mean-Standard Deviation method) to account for any variation in paper difficulty across shifts. Because raw marks are governed by yes, 0.25 marks per wrong answer in Paper I and 0.50 marks per wrong answer in Paper II, maintaining high accuracy (85%+) significantly boosts your normalized score.

Factors Determining SSC CPO Cut-Off

  • Total number of notified vacancies / available seats across participating cadres and institutions
  • Total number of registered vs actual appearing candidates in the SSC CPO cycle
  • Relative difficulty level of the question paper (and shift-wise variation in multi-shift CBT exams)
  • Category-wise vertical (UR, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST) and horizontal (PwBD, ESM, Women) reservation ratios
  • Previous year cut-off trajectory and candidate score distribution at the top percentiles

How to prepare for SSC CPO

  1. Make English your strongest subject: it is 25 of the 100 marks in Paper I and 200 of the 320 marks in Paper II, which decides the final merit.
  2. Train for the 100 metre sprint, the 1.6 km run and the jumps from the start of preparation; the PET is where fit written-test qualifiers are often eliminated.
  3. Get your driving licence applied for early if you are a male candidate opting for Delhi Police.
  4. Use previous year Paper I questions to build speed, since each of the four sections now has its own 15 minute timer within a one-hour paper.
  5. Keep accuracy high: 0.25 marks are lost per wrong answer in Paper I and 0.50 marks in Paper II, so guesswork quickly pulls the score down.
  6. Read the official SSC CPO notification carefully for the exact pattern, eligibility and selection stages.
