About UTET
The Uttarakhand Teacher Eligibility Test (UTET) is the state TET that makes a candidate eligible to be appointed as a teacher in Uttarakhand schools under the RTE Act and NCTE rules. It is conducted by the Uttarakhand Board of School Education (Uttarakhand Vidyalayi Shiksha Parishad), Ramnagar, Nainital. UTET has two papers: Paper I (UTET-I) for teachers of Classes I to V and Paper II (UTET-II) for Classes VI to VIII. Both are held on the same day in two shifts, and you can take either or both. Passing UTET is only an eligibility condition and does not by itself give a right to a job.
The examination process for UTET comprises 1 stage: UTET written exam. The official syllabus tests candidates across 6 core areas — Child Development and Pedagogy, Language I and Language II, Mathematics, Environmental Studies (Paper I), Science (Paper II, Maths and Science option), Social Studies (Paper II, Social Studies option) — focusing on conceptual clarity, speed, and accuracy. A single written exam per paper. Candidates who reach the qualifying marks receive the UTET certificate. Teacher recruitment itself happens separately under state service rules.

How to prepare for UTET
- Know your target score: 90 out of 150 for general category, 75 for OBC, persons with disabilities, dependents of freedom fighters and ex-servicemen, and 60 for SC and ST candidates.
- Attempt every question. UTET has no negative marking, so a guess can only help you.
- Choose your languages carefully at the application stage. Language I (Hindi or English) is tested at a higher level than Language II, and Language II (Hindi, English, Sanskrit or Urdu) must be different.
- Child Development and Pedagogy appears in both papers, so if you take Paper I and Paper II on the same day, this section gives you double value from the same preparation.
- For Paper II, decide early between Mathematics and Science or Social Studies. That 60-mark section is the biggest single block in the paper, so match it to the subject you plan to teach.
- Base your content preparation on Classes I to VIII school textbooks, but study the pedagogy angle of every subject too, because each content section of UTET also tests how to teach that subject.
- Practice with the UTET question booklets and answer keys the board publishes on ukutet.com, and with CTET papers, since both follow the NCTE framework.
