CMAT exam overview and highlights

About CMAT

CMAT (Common Management Admission Test) is a national-level management entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to MBA and PGDM programmes in AICTE-approved institutions and universities. It is widely used by institutes in Maharashtra such as JBIMS, SIMSREE and K J Somaiya, as well as by many colleges across the country. It is considered less difficult than CAT and XAT.

The examination process for CMAT comprises 2 stages: Computer-based test, followed by Institute counselling or selection. The official syllabus tests candidates across 5 core areas — Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, General Awareness, Innovation and Entrepreneurship — focusing on conceptual clarity, speed, and accuracy. NTA publishes a percentile and rank. Each participating institute shortlists on the CMAT score and then holds its own group discussion, personal interview or state-level counselling before making an offer.

CMAT cut-off trends, score normalization and safe target score

National Testing Agency (NTA) releases the official CMAT qualifying cut-off and opening/closing ranks (or percentiles) after each exam cycle. While clearing the qualifying cut-off makes you eligible for counselling, admission to top participating institutes depends on your All-India Rank (AIR) and category seat matrix.

CMAT — Qualifying Standards & Safe Target Benchmarks

CMAT qualifying standards and safe target score
CategoryQualifying Floor / StandardRecommended Safe Target
General / Unreserved (UR)30% to 40% Minimum Qualifying Floor72% to 82% of Total Marks (95+ Percentile in Mock Tests)
General — Economically Weaker Section (GEN-EWS)25% to 35% Minimum Qualifying Floor68% to 78% of Total Marks
Other Backward Classes (OBC-NCL)25% to 35% Minimum Qualifying Floor68% to 78% of Total Marks
Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled Tribe (ST) / PwBD20% to 30% Minimum Qualifying Floor58% to 70% of Total Marks

Score Normalization & Marking Impact

When CMAT is conducted across multiple shifts or sessions, National Testing Agency (NTA) applies standard score normalization (Equi-Percentile or Mean-Standard Deviation method) to account for any variation in paper difficulty across shifts. Because raw marks are governed by one mark deducted per wrong answer; four marks for each correct answer, maintaining high accuracy (85%+) significantly boosts your normalized score.

Factors Determining CMAT Cut-Off

  • Total number of notified vacancies / available seats across participating cadres and institutions
  • Total number of registered vs actual appearing candidates in the CMAT cycle
  • Relative difficulty level of the question paper (and shift-wise variation in multi-shift CBT exams)
  • Category-wise vertical (UR, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST) and horizontal (PwBD, ESM, Women) reservation ratios
  • Previous year cut-off trajectory and candidate score distribution at the top percentiles

How to prepare for CMAT

  1. With 100 questions in 3 hours there is ample time, so focus on accuracy and avoid losing marks to negative marking.
  2. General Awareness and Innovation and Entrepreneurship carry 40% of the marks, so read business news daily and prepare a static GK notebook.
  3. Reuse CAT and other MBA preparation for the aptitude sections; the difficulty level is lower, so speed with accuracy is enough.
  4. Attempt NTA's previous CMAT papers to understand the question style in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship section.
  5. Target a high percentile because institutes like JBIMS admit at the very top of the CMAT list.
  6. Read the official CMAT syllabus and information bulletin before you start, and keep it next to your study plan.
