GATE exam overview and highlights

About GATE

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is a national examination that tests understanding of undergraduate engineering, science, architecture and humanities subjects. It is conducted jointly by IISc Bengaluru and the seven older IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board, with the organising institute rotating each year. The score is used for MTech, MS and PhD admissions with scholarship, and by many PSUs and research organisations for recruitment.

The examination process for GATE comprises 2 stages: Computer-based test, followed by Admission or recruitment. The official syllabus tests candidates across 3 core areas — General Aptitude (common to all papers), Engineering Mathematics (most engineering papers), Core subject (varies by paper) — focusing on conceptual clarity, speed, and accuracy. Candidates above the qualifying marks in their paper receive a GATE score. For MTech and PhD admissions, institutes use the score with their own cut-offs, and some add a written test or interview. Public sector undertakings and research organisations shortlist candidates on GATE score and then hold interviews.

Key subjects

  • General Aptitude (common to all papers)
  • Engineering Mathematics (most engineering papers)
  • Core subject (varies by paper)

What clearing GATE leads to

  • MTech, ME, MS and PhD admission at IITs, IISc, NITs and other institutes with scholarship
  • Recruitment by PSUs such as IOCL, ONGC, NTPC, BHEL, PGCIL and others
  • Shortlisting for DRDO, BARC, ISRO and other research organisations
  • Admission to some foreign universities and fellowships
  • Admission & Seat Allotment: Admission to MTech, ME, MS and PhD programmes at IITs, IISc, NITs and other institutes, usually with a monthly stipend, and shortlisting for engineer posts in public sector undertakings
  • Centralised merit counselling and seat allocation through IISc Bengaluru and the IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee) on rotation, under the National Coordination Board, Ministry of Education participating institutes

GATE cut-off trends, score normalization and safe target score

IISc Bengaluru and the IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee) on rotation, under the National Coordination Board, Ministry of Education releases the official GATE qualifying cut-off and opening/closing ranks (or percentiles) after each exam cycle. While clearing the qualifying cut-off makes you eligible for counselling, admission to top participating institutes depends on your All-India Rank (AIR) and category seat matrix.

GATE — Qualifying Standards & Safe Target Benchmarks

GATE qualifying standards and safe target score
CategoryQualifying Floor / StandardRecommended Safe Target
General / Unreserved (UR)30% to 40% Minimum Qualifying Floor72% to 82% of Total Marks (95+ Percentile in Mock Tests)
General — Economically Weaker Section (GEN-EWS)25% to 35% Minimum Qualifying Floor68% to 78% of Total Marks
Other Backward Classes (OBC-NCL)25% to 35% Minimum Qualifying Floor68% to 78% of Total Marks
Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled Tribe (ST) / PwBD20% to 30% Minimum Qualifying Floor58% to 70% of Total Marks

Score Normalization & Marking Impact

When GATE is conducted across multiple shifts or sessions, IISc Bengaluru and the IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee) on rotation, under the National Coordination Board, Ministry of Education applies standard score normalization (Equi-Percentile or Mean-Standard Deviation method) to account for any variation in paper difficulty across shifts. Because raw marks are governed by one-third of a mark deducted for a wrong 1-mark MCQ and two-thirds for a wrong 2-mark MCQ; no negative marking for MSQ and numerical answer type questions, maintaining high accuracy (85%+) significantly boosts your normalized score.

Factors Determining GATE Cut-Off

  • Total number of notified vacancies / available seats across participating cadres and institutions
  • Total number of registered vs actual appearing candidates in the GATE cycle
  • Relative difficulty level of the question paper (and shift-wise variation in multi-shift CBT exams)
  • Category-wise vertical (UR, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST) and horizontal (PwBD, ESM, Women) reservation ratios
  • Previous year cut-off trajectory and candidate score distribution at the top percentiles

How to prepare for GATE

  1. Download the official syllabus of your paper and tick off topics, since GATE rarely asks outside it.
  2. Solve the last 10 to 15 years of GATE questions topic-wise; many concepts repeat with small variations.
  3. Numerical answer type questions have no negative marking, so never leave them blank.
  4. Spend regular time on General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics, which together are around 30 marks and are relatively easy to score.
  5. Use the virtual calculator in mock tests because it is the only calculator allowed in the exam.
  6. Start full-length mocks at least two months before the exam and analyse the time taken per section.
