JEE Main exam overview and highlights

About JEE Main

JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination, Main) is the national engineering entrance examination for admission to BE/BTech, BArch and BPlanning courses at the NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes, and it is the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Many state and private institutions also use the JEE Main score.

The examination process for JEE Main comprises 3 stages: Paper 1: BE/BTech, followed by Paper 2A: BArch and Paper 2B: BPlanning, followed by JoSAA counselling. The official syllabus tests candidates across 3 core areas — Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics — focusing on conceptual clarity, speed, and accuracy. The better of the two session scores is used for the All India Rank. Admission to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs is through JoSAA counselling on the basis of rank, category and board eligibility. The top candidates by rank also qualify to sit for JEE Advanced.

JEE Main cut-off trends, score normalization and safe target score

National Testing Agency (NTA) releases the official JEE Main qualifying cut-off and opening/closing ranks (or percentiles) after each exam cycle. While clearing the qualifying cut-off makes you eligible for counselling, admission to top participating institutes depends on your All-India Rank (AIR) and category seat matrix.

JEE Main — Qualifying Standards & Safe Target Benchmarks

JEE Main qualifying standards and safe target score
CategoryQualifying Floor / StandardRecommended Safe Target
General / Unreserved (UR)30% to 40% Minimum Qualifying Floor72% to 82% of Total Marks (95+ Percentile in Mock Tests)
General — Economically Weaker Section (GEN-EWS)25% to 35% Minimum Qualifying Floor68% to 78% of Total Marks
Other Backward Classes (OBC-NCL)25% to 35% Minimum Qualifying Floor68% to 78% of Total Marks
Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled Tribe (ST) / PwBD20% to 30% Minimum Qualifying Floor58% to 70% of Total Marks

Score Normalization & Marking Impact

When JEE Main is conducted across multiple shifts or sessions, National Testing Agency (NTA) applies standard score normalization (Equi-Percentile or Mean-Standard Deviation method) to account for any variation in paper difficulty across shifts. Because raw marks are governed by one mark deducted per wrong answer; four marks for each correct answer, maintaining high accuracy (85%+) significantly boosts your normalized score.

Factors Determining JEE Main Cut-Off

  • Total number of notified vacancies / available seats across participating cadres and institutions
  • Total number of registered vs actual appearing candidates in the JEE Main cycle
  • Relative difficulty level of the question paper (and shift-wise variation in multi-shift CBT exams)
  • Category-wise vertical (UR, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST) and horizontal (PwBD, ESM, Women) reservation ratios
  • Previous year cut-off trajectory and candidate score distribution at the top percentiles

How to prepare for JEE Main

  1. Numerical-value questions now carry negative marking too, so verify units and rounding before submitting an answer.
  2. Since the exam is held in two sessions, use the January attempt as a full-scale diagnostic and fix weak chapters for April.
  3. Strong NCERT-level Chemistry, especially Inorganic, gives quick marks and leaves time for Physics and Mathematics.
  4. Practice previous session papers on a computer under the 3-hour limit to master the interface and the mark-for-review strategy.
  5. Do not neglect Class 11 chapters, which make up roughly half the paper every session.
  6. Keep a one-page formula sheet per chapter and revise it every week in the last two months.

JEE Main FAQs

What is the JEE Main Paper 1 exam pattern?

Paper 1 (BE/BTech) is a 3-hour computer-based test of 75 questions, 25 each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, for 300 marks. Each correct answer gets 4 marks and each wrong answer deducts 1 mark.

How many attempts are allowed in JEE Main?

You can appear in both sessions each year for three consecutive years from the year you pass Class 12, so up to six sessions in total.

Is 75% in Class 12 required for JEE Main?

There is no percentage requirement to appear in JEE Main, but for admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs you need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board.

Is the better of the two JEE Main sessions counted?

Yes, if you appear in both sessions, the better NTA score is used for the rank.

Do I need JEE Main to get into IITs?

Yes, you must qualify in JEE Main Paper 1 and be among the top candidates (around 2.5 lakh) to appear in JEE Advanced, which is the entrance for the IITs.

What is the selection process and exam pattern for JEE Main?

JEE Main is conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA) across 3 stages: Paper 1: BE/BTech → Paper 2A: BArch and Paper 2B: BPlanning → JoSAA counselling. The better of the two session scores is used for the All India Rank. Admission to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs is through JoSAA counselling on the basis of rank, category and board eligibility. The top candidates by rank also qualify to sit for JEE Advanced.

What is the age limit and educational qualification for JEE Main?

Educational Qualification: Passed Class 12 (or equivalent) in the previous two years or appearing in the current year, with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects plus one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject. For admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs, 75% marks in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a place in the top 20 percentile of the board is needed. Age Limit: No age limit for JEE Main; individual institutes may have age criteria.

Is there negative marking in the JEE Main exam?

Yes — One mark deducted per wrong answer; four marks for each correct answer. Candidates should use a two-pass attempt strategy during mock tests to keep accuracy above 85% and minimise negative marking deductions.

Which institutes and programmes accept JEE Main scores?

Admission to BTech, BArch and BPlan seats at NITs, IIITs and GFTIs through JoSAA, and eligibility for JEE Advanced. Validity: Score valid for that admission cycle only.

When is the JEE Main notification released and how can I apply online?

JEE Main is held twice a year (January and April sessions) (Two sessions: registration in November or December with the exam in January, and registration in February with the exam in April; final result with the All India Rank after the April session). Online on jeemain.nta.nic.in.
