JEE Advanced exam overview and highlights

About JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced is the entrance examination for admission to the undergraduate programmes (BTech, BS, dual degree and integrated MTech) at the 23 IITs. It is conducted each year by one of the IITs on rotation under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB). Only candidates who qualify in JEE Main Paper 1 within the prescribed rank cut-off can appear, and the score is also used by IISc, IISERs, IIST and a few other institutes.

The examination process for JEE Advanced comprises 3 stages: Paper 1 and Paper 2, followed by Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT), followed by JoSAA counselling. The official syllabus tests candidates across 3 core areas — Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics — focusing on conceptual clarity, speed, and accuracy. A rank list is prepared from the combined marks of Paper 1 and Paper 2, subject to minimum subject-wise and aggregate marks. Seats at the IITs are allotted through JoSAA counselling on the basis of rank and choices.

Score Normalization & Marking Impact

When JEE Advanced is conducted across multiple shifts or sessions, One of the IITs on rotation, under the Joint Admission Board (JAB) applies standard score normalization (Equi-Percentile or Mean-Standard Deviation method) to account for any variation in paper difficulty across shifts. Because raw marks are governed by varies by question type each year; typically full-marks, partial-marks and negative-marks schemes are used, maintaining high accuracy (85%+) significantly boosts your normalized score.

Factors Determining JEE Advanced Cut-Off

  • Total number of notified vacancies / available seats across participating cadres and institutions
  • Total number of registered vs actual appearing candidates in the JEE Advanced cycle
  • Relative difficulty level of the question paper (and shift-wise variation in multi-shift CBT exams)
  • Category-wise vertical (UR, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST) and horizontal (PwBD, ESM, Women) reservation ratios
  • Previous year cut-off trajectory and candidate score distribution at the top percentiles

How to prepare for JEE Advanced

  1. Focus on depth and multi-concept problems rather than speed alone, because JEE Advanced tests application across chapters.
  2. Study the marking scheme of each question type on exam day; partial marking for multiple-correct questions rewards careful, not reckless, attempts.
  3. Solve at least ten years of previous JEE Advanced papers under the actual two-paper, same-day schedule.
  4. Do not leave any of the three subjects weak, since subject-wise minimum marks apply for the rank list.
  5. Use the gap between JEE Main and JEE Advanced for full-syllabus revision and mock analysis rather than new topics.
  6. Read the official JEE Advanced syllabus and information bulletin before you start, and keep it next to your study plan.
